Pre-Test Driving Lessons in Ireland: What to Practise Before Your Test

You have completed your EDT lessons, gained experience on the road and finally booked your driving test. Now comes the part that many learners find challenging: making sure your driving is consistent enough to meet the examiner's expectations.

Even drivers who have spent months practising can develop habits they are unaware of. Perhaps you forget a mirror check when approaching a junction, struggle with a particular manoeuvre or become hesitant when traffic gets busy.

This is where pre-test driving lessons can help.

A focused session with an experienced driving instructor gives you an opportunity to identify weaknesses, work on specific driving skills and understand what needs attention before your examination.

If your driving test is approaching in Dublin, here is what you should know about pre-test lessons and how to get the most from them.

What Are Pre-Test Driving Lessons?

Pre-test driving lessons are additional practical sessions designed to help learner drivers prepare for their official RSA driving examination.

Unlike beginner lessons, which introduce the fundamentals of driving, pre-test lessons concentrate on the skills you have already developed and the areas that need improvement.

An instructor will assess your driving, observe how you handle different situations and provide feedback based on your performance.

The sessions can cover:

Road positioning and observation.
Junctions and roundabouts.
Reversing around a corner.
Turnabout manoeuvres.
Hill starts.
Speed management.
Independent driving.
Understanding common driving faults.

At Next Level Driving School, pre-test driving lessons in Tallaght, Dublin are tailored to individual learning needs.

You can discuss the areas where you need additional practice rather than spending the entire lesson repeating skills you have already mastered.

When Should You Start Taking Pre-Test Lessons?

Timing matters.

Booking a pre-test lesson too early may mean you still have several areas to work on before the examination. Leaving it until the last minute can make it difficult to correct habits that have developed over time.

A sensible approach is to arrange an assessment once you have completed your mandatory EDT sessions and gained enough additional practice to drive independently.

This gives your instructor an opportunity to assess your current ability and recommend further training.

If you have several weeks before your test, you can use that time to work on the feedback from each session.

For learners who are already driving consistently, a focused lesson closer to the examination can help identify smaller issues that might otherwise go unnoticed.

There is no fixed number of pre-test lessons that suits everyone. Your experience and driving ability should determine how much preparation you need.

What Does an Instructor Check During a Pre-Test Lesson?

A good pre-test lesson should cover more than the manoeuvres. Your instructor needs to understand how you drive throughout an ordinary journey.

Here are some of the areas that deserve attention.

1. Mirror Checks and Observation

Observation is one of the habits that examiners assess throughout the driving test.

You should know when to check your mirrors and how to remain aware of vehicles, pedestrians and cyclists around you.

Common problems include:

Checking mirrors too late.
Forgetting blind-spot checks when moving off.
Changing direction without checking surrounding traffic.
Failing to observe properly when approaching junctions.

Your instructor can help you develop a consistent observation routine that suits each driving situation.

2. Road Positioning

Your position on the road affects your safety and the safety of other road users.

During your pre-test lesson, pay attention to how you approach junctions, navigate narrow roads and pass parked vehicles.

You should also be comfortable following lane markings and selecting the correct position when approaching roundabouts.

Poor road positioning can become a repeated habit if it is not corrected during practice.

3. Speed Management

Driving safely involves choosing a speed that suits the conditions.

A learner may travel within the speed limit but still approach a junction too quickly. Another may drive unnecessarily slowly when the road is clear.

Your instructor should help you understand when to adjust your speed and how to maintain appropriate progress without taking unnecessary risks.

4. Junctions and Roundabouts

These situations require good judgement.

You need to assess traffic, understand right-of-way rules and decide when it is safe to proceed.

Practise approaching different types of junctions rather than relying on one familiar route. Dublin has a variety of road layouts, and your driving should remain consistent when the surroundings change.

Which Driving Test Manoeuvres Should You Practise?

The RSA practical driving test includes specific manoeuvres. You should be comfortable completing each one while maintaining proper observation and vehicle control.

Reversing Around a Corner

This manoeuvre tests your ability to reverse safely while maintaining control of the vehicle.

You should practise:

Selecting a suitable position before reversing.
Checking for pedestrians and approaching traffic.
Maintaining a slow, controlled speed.
Looking around throughout the manoeuvre.
Correcting your position safely when necessary.

Avoid rushing. Observation is just as important as steering accuracy.

Turnabout Manoeuvre

A turnabout requires you to turn the vehicle around safely using an appropriate road space.

You need to assess whether the location is suitable and check for other road users before beginning.

Practise controlling the vehicle through each movement and checking your surroundings before changing direction.

Hill Start

A hill start requires you to move away safely on an incline without losing control of the vehicle.

Manual drivers need to coordinate the clutch and accelerator correctly. Automatic drivers must also demonstrate appropriate vehicle control and observation.

Your instructor can identify whether you are rushing the movement or relying too heavily on the handbrake.

Is a Mock Driving Test Worth Doing?

Yes. A mock driving test can be one of the most useful parts of your preparation.

During an ordinary driving lesson, your instructor may give you reminders and instructions as you move through different situations.

A mock test changes that experience.

You are asked to drive in a more formal test-like setting, with fewer prompts and a greater emphasis on independent decision-making.

The instructor can assess your performance and explain which areas need attention.

A mock driving test may include:

Questions about road signs and road rules.
Vehicle safety and technical checks.
Moving off and stopping.
Driving through different traffic conditions.
Reversing around a corner.
A turnabout.
A hill start.
General observation and road positioning.

Afterwards, ask for clear feedback. Find out which faults were repeated and which ones could have the greatest effect on your assessment.

A mock test is a practice exercise, not an official RSA result. It cannot guarantee that you will pass, but it can help you understand how prepared you are.

Should You Practise on Your Local Driving Test Routes?

Familiarity with the area around your test centre can be useful.

For example, if you are taking your test in Tallaght, spending time driving around the surrounding roads can help you become comfortable with local junctions, roundabouts, traffic conditions and road layouts.

However, learning a route by memory is not a substitute for good driving.

The examiner may take you along roads you have not practised on. You need to understand road signs, markings and traffic conditions well enough to respond correctly wherever you are taken.

Ask your instructor to include different road types in your pre-test driving practice.

The aim is to improve your ability to handle unfamiliar situations without becoming unsettled.

How Many Pre-Test Driving Lessons Do You Need?

There is no official requirement to complete a specific number of pre-test lessons.

Your instructor should assess your current driving standard before recommending additional sessions.

The following guide may help:

Your current driving ability	Suggested approach
Confident and consistent	A focused assessment and mock test
Generally capable but making repeated mistakes	Additional lessons targeting those faults
Struggling with manoeuvres	Focused manoeuvre practice
Nervous during independent driving	More supervised practice and mock tests
Returning after a long break	Refresher training before test preparation

Do not book lessons simply to reach a particular number. Focus on the skills you need to improve.

What Should You Bring to Your Pre-Test Lesson?

Before attending your lesson, make sure you have your valid learner permit and any corrective lenses you need for driving.

It also helps to arrive with an idea of the areas where you struggle.

For example, you might tell your instructor that you have difficulty judging gaps at roundabouts or tend to forget mirror checks when changing direction.

Being specific allows the instructor to make better use of the available time.

If you have already received feedback from a previous driving test, bring your test report. It can help identify faults that need further attention.

Arranging Driving Test Car Hire in Dublin

Some learners do not have access to a suitable vehicle for their practical driving examination.

In that situation, driving test car hire may be an option.

Before booking, check that the vehicle meets the RSA requirements and that you have the correct insurance cover.

If you are hiring through a driving school, confirm:

Whether a manual or automatic vehicle is available.
Whether the vehicle is suitable for your test category.
Whether insurance covers the examination.
Whether an assessment is required before using the car.
Whether a pre-test or familiarisation lesson can be arranged.

Next Level Driving School also advertises driving test car hire for learners who need a vehicle for their examination. Contact the school to confirm availability and booking conditions.

Taking your test in a vehicle you have already practised in can make the experience more familiar.

Common Mistakes Learners Make Before Their Driving Test

Some mistakes are surprisingly simple. They often happen because learners become nervous or stop following habits they normally perform correctly.

Watch out for these problems during your final preparation:

Rushing manoeuvres: Trying to complete a reverse or turnabout quickly can lead to poor observation and vehicle control.

Forgetting mirror checks: You may remember to check your mirrors during normal lessons but forget when concentrating on a difficult situation.

Poor judgement at junctions: Hesitating unnecessarily or moving into traffic without a safe gap can affect your driving.

Incorrect road positioning: Small positioning problems can become more noticeable during the examination.

Ignoring instructor feedback: Repeating the same mistakes without working on them is unlikely to improve your driving.

Your pre-test lessons should focus on correcting these habits before your examination date.
